A Dedication for Our Elders

What is this project?

To celebrate our elders, we want to hear their stories, insights, and experiences. We want to encourage conversations between generations so that wisdom can be passed down and shared through our community. We want to give value to what our elders and ancestors have to share.

Building off curriculum by Roderick Daus-Magbual & Doris Garcia, we’ve built the following guidelines and suggestions on how to conduct interviews or create media with your elders. You can follow the suggestions, but feel free to expand and contribute in whatever way you’re comfortable with.

This is an evolving and open community tribute to our ancestors, elders, and loved ones. Participate in your own way.

How can I participate?

Sit down and have a conversation with your loved one. Use your phone and record the conversation!

Suggested Guiding Questions:

Wisdom

  • What seed of wisdom would you like to pass down?
  • What are different things that keep you motivated in your life?
  • What helped you to survive the different struggles in your life?

Immigration

  • Why did you/your family come to the U.S.? What did you expect? What were your goals (economic, social, and political)?
  • What did you know about America? Did you have friends and family here already?
